The Team at Mercy :)

As a Royal Life accredited swim school this year we participated in the Royal Life swim school open day. It was a great day and our swimmers had lots of fun. This was the first time we have been involved in the open day and we look forward to doing it again next year. It was a great opportunity for swimmers to come in and get assessments for the preschool swimmers.

Our swim program is for open for swimmers from 5 month to 6 years of age. Our baby program from 5 months to 3 years is for parent and swimmers to learn essential water safety skills. These classes are focused around having fun, incorporating skill based activities around games and songs. These swimmers learn breath control, floating, basic kicking, submersion and safe water entry to name a few.

From the age of 3 swimmers move to a transition class where they gain confidence without parents in the water. Our preschool classes move on from here to get our swimmers floating, gliding and commencing correct stroke technique and encouraging safe water practices.

Classes are run to coincide with the school term. This term has just commenced this week the 12th October. If you want any more information call Sharon on 9271 9422 or send an email mercybabyswim@mercyphysio.com.au.

Mel Fethers is back

Hello Everyone,

It’s Melissa Fethers (physiotherapist) here just to let you know I’m back at Mercy Physiotherapy after a few years on hiatus busy raising my three young boys. I was previously at Mercy Physiotherapy for many years working in Women’s Health both in the clinic and up on the Maternity Ward in the Hospital.

I’m very excited to be back to run the Antenatal Aqua Classes on Tuesday nights at 5pm and 6pm. It’s such a great way to exercise while pregnant, and we have a really fun time.

I’m also returning to running the Preparation for Childbirth classes that are on once a month on a Saturday morning from 8.30 to 11.30. These classes focus on physical skills to empower a woman and her partner to effectively manage pain and facilitate the labour process, using her body to its best advantage both in pregnancy and throughout childbirth. You don’t need to be having your baby at St John of God Mount Lawley to attend these classes, everyone is welcome. I love teaching these classes and assisting women and their partners through this exciting time in their lives. From the feedback I have received over the years, the skills taught have had a really positive effect or many women throughout their labour.

For any more information on any of the above classes, please call us on 9271 9422. I look forward to seeing you soon at Mercy Physiotherapy.

The next scheduled Saturday Prep for Child birth classes are:

20th June

18th July

15th August

12th September

3rd October

7th November

12th December

Free babysitting for Pilates Classes.

Pilates babysitting

We have been running our postnatal and antenatal circuit Pilates classes for 3 months now and they are becoming very popular. All classes are run by a Physiotherapist with Pilates qualifications.

Pilates works on activating the deep abdominal and pelvic floor muscles to improve core strength and balance, as well as injury prevention. As the body changes throughout pregnancy, Pilates will assist with core strength and postural alignment. Antenatal Pilates can be attended throughout any stage of your pregnancy, right up until you pop!

The postnatal Pilates class will assist in regaining strength, flexibility and general fitness after the birth. These classes are suitable for mums 6 weeks to 8 months post birth. You can bring your baby as we have a babysitter for all classes. These classes do require an initial consultation before joining the circuit class.

Bookings for both classes are essential. If you are interested in attending call Reception on 9271 9422 to find out about session time.

Mercy Baby Swim celebrates 15 years!

Mercy Baby Swim is into its 15th year this year. We have experienced continued growth through the years with currently over 350 students in the swim school.

Term 1 swimming will commence at the beginning of February. We still have spaces available for the coming term. We cater for infants to toddlers from 5 months to 3 years of age. These lessons incorporate skills based activities in the form of various games and songs. Some of the skills taught are water confidence, breathing control, arm actions, basic kicking, submersion and safe water entry.

The preschool program is from 3 years to 6 years. This program is an extension of the skills learnt in the baby swim program. Children in this program are placed in ability appropriate classes. In these classes swimmers learn more advanced basic water skills (sculling, treading water, gliding), independent movement on front and back and the commencement of correct stroke technique.

Classes are held 7 days per week and coincide with the school term. All classes are 30 minute duration. If you are interested in enrolling call Sharon, the baby swim co-ordinator, on 9271 9422 to check available times and days.

Dad's handbook: A Guide to the first 12 months

Mind the bump

Beyond blue have put together a great resource specifically for dads called the Dad’s handbook: A guide to the first 12 months. It’s full of practical tips on how to hold babies, what to do when they cry, looking after yourself and your partner, sleep cycles and how to play with babies – all those things you need to know and weren’t quite sure how to ask. It also has a great checklist for what to bring to the hospital and what you need to do in the last few weeks of your partner’s pregnancy. I think it’s a great read for mum’s too!

'Mind the bump' App.

Smiling Mind and Beyond Blue have also collaborated to produce a mindfulness meditation app called Mind the Bump! It provides tailored exercises to support your mental and emotional wellbeing from day one of pregnancy through to 24 months after birth. The program is for fathers, mothers, single parents and same-sex couples. It’s easy to use, easy to access and free. We know one in seven women will experience postnatal depression, one in 20 men and one in 10 women will experience depression in pregnancy – so let’s get downloading!

Mindfulness will help train your brain to manage stress, cope with change and build connection by consciously paying attention to the present moment with purpose. The app has activities to help you achieve this, which is pretty good timing for new parents! There is also an overview on how a baby and child’s brain will develop and how to optimise that development. It helps give you the skills to develop their emotional resilience, develop healthy relationships and how to control emotions.
